Hoover, Marsh Spark Fourth-Quarter Rally as Indiana Beats Nebraska 20–17
LINCOLN, Neb. — Indiana needed an answer. Josh Hoover and Nick Marsh delivered two.
Trailing Nebraska 17–6 in the fourth quarter, the Hoosiers rallied behind two Hoover-to-Marsh touchdown passes to pull out a 20–17 victory at Memorial Stadium.
For much of Saturday, Nebraska dictated the game. The Huskers were physical, creative with their formations and difficult to get off the field. Indiana struggled to establish its running game, while Nebraska quarterback Anthony Colandrea repeatedly challenged the defense with his legs.
But when Indiana needed its quarterback to make game-changing plays, Hoover responded.
First came an RPO slant to Marsh for a touchdown, cutting Nebraska’s lead to 17–13 and giving the Hoosiers a badly needed spark.
Then came the decisive play. Facing fourth-and-1, Indiana used play action, and Hoover found a wide-open Marsh for a 75-yard touchdown. An afternoon spent searching for offensive rhythm suddenly became a three-point Indiana lead.
Hoover finished 12-of-22 for 263 yards, two touchdowns and no interceptions. Marsh was the difference-maker, catching seven passes for 187 yards and both touchdowns.
Those numbers tell the story of how Indiana survived. The Hoosiers rushed for just 65 yards on 22 attempts, forcing the passing game to provide the explosive plays their ground attack could not consistently produce.
Nebraska made Indiana earn every bit of this victory. Colandrea’s mobility created problems throughout the afternoon, and his fourth-quarter touchdown run pushed the Huskers’ advantage to 11 points. Nebraska’s ability to sustain possessions kept Indiana’s offense watching from the sideline for long stretches.
The Hoosiers finished with 328 total yards to Nebraska’s 390. Yet Indiana found the scoring plays it needed late and prevented the Huskers from adding to their lead after going ahead 17–6.
There are clear issues to address before Ohio State comes to Bloomington:
- The running game must become more dependable against physical defensive fronts.
- The defense must improve its containment of mobile quarterbacks.
- Better early-down execution must create more favorable third-down situations.
But those corrections come after a win — one Indiana had to fight to secure.
This was not the comfortable afternoon the Hoosiers wanted. It was a road test that exposed weaknesses and demanded a response.
Hoover made the throws. Marsh finished the plays. Indiana completed the comeback.
Final: Indiana 20, Nebraska 17.
