Indiana vs. Western Kentucky: Coach Griff’s Pregame Primer Goes Live at 2 PM

It’s game day in Bloomington.

No. 4 Indiana turns its attention to Western Kentucky Saturday afternoon at Memorial Stadium, but before the Hoosiers take the field, Hoosier Football Tailgate with Coach Griff will be live at 2:00 PM ET with the final Pregame Primer.

The Pregame Primer isn’t another full game preview. We handled that Thursday night. Saturday’s show is about narrowing everything we’ve studied during the week into the handful of things that should determine what happens once the football is kicked off.

What does Western Kentucky want to do? Where can Indiana attack? Which players and matchups deserve your attention? And what numbers will tell us whether the Hoosiers are playing to their standard?

Indiana’s Next Step

Indiana’s 55-0 victory over Howard provided plenty of positives, particularly from a defense that allowed only 57 total yards. But the standard inside Curt Cignetti’s program isn’t simply winning the previous game. It’s improving from it.

For Indiana offensively, one of my primary areas of focus remains quarterback Josh Hoover’s lower-body mechanics. The coaching progression remains simple: Base. Weight transfer. Front foot. Hip rotation. Finish.

I’m not interested solely in whether a deep ball results in a completion. I want to see whether Hoover’s process is right. When his feet, lower body and throwing motion are connected, the accuracy and consistency should follow.

Indiana also needs to continue establishing its identity on the ground. Turbo Richard and Lee Beebe Jr. give the Hoosiers a combination capable of creating both physical and explosive runs. If Indiana can establish that running game early, the entire offensive menu becomes available.

Coach Griff’s Numbers to Win

We’re introducing another element to Saturday’s Pregame Primer: Coach Griff’s Numbers to Win. Instead of waiting until after the game to decide whether Indiana played well, we’re establishing the benchmarks beforehand.

For the Hoosier offense, I’m looking for 185 rushing yards, 250 passing yards, 435 total yards and zero turnovers.

Defensively, the targets are just as clear: hold Western Kentucky to 100 rushing yards or fewer, 185 passing yards or fewer and 285 total yards or fewer — while creating at least two takeaways.

Then there’s special teams. Saturday’s goal is for the unit to either score or directly set up a score. And I’ll add one stretch goal: block a punt.

Those numbers aren’t predictions for the box score. They’re benchmarks for how I believe Indiana needs to play. We’ll save them, then Monday night put the actual numbers right beside them and see how Indiana measured up.

Five Goals for Indiana

  1. Win the Line of Scrimmage Again — establish physical control on both sides.
  2. Make Western Kentucky One-Dimensional — stop the run, create long-yardage situations and attack the protection.
  3. Hoover — Feet Before Arm — continue improving the quarterback’s lower-body mechanics and consistency.
  4. Establish the Run and Maintain Balance — don’t become dependent on either phase of the offense.
  5. Play Clean and Build Depth — protect the football, limit penalties and create meaningful snaps for players Indiana may need later.
