Coach Griff’s Film Room: Reading the RPO: Indiana’s Outside Hitch

Back to Coach Griff’s Film Room

The Situation

On first-and-10 against Northwestern, Indiana combines run action with a quick outside hitch.

The Concept and Defensive Response

Coach Griff points to a defender vacating space as a possible trigger for the throw. He also notes that safety depth could be part of Hoover’s decision. Without Indiana’s actual coaching rules, those keys remain interpretations of the film rather than confirmed assignments.

What to Watch

• The defender moving out of the potential throwing window.
• The safety’s depth and the outside matchup.
• Hoover’s quick delivery and the receiver’s work after the catch.

Coach Griff’s Take

The film shows an effective answer into available space. We can explain why the window is attractive while being honest that we do not know Indiana’s exact read rules.
