WATCH: Curt Cignetti Previews Northwestern — ‘We’re Process Oriented’
Indiana head coach Curt Cignetti met with the media Monday as the 3-0 Hoosiers turn their attention to Friday night’s Big Ten opener against Northwestern at Memorial Stadium.
The Message: Northwestern Has Indiana’s Full Attention
Cignetti’s message lined up almost perfectly with the coaching perspective we’ve been discussing at Hoosier Tailgate: once the season starts, the focus gets smaller. The next opponent, the next practice and the next correction matter more than conversations about December.
Asked about the Big Ten schedule and postseason goals, Cignetti made the point plainly: “We don’t think that way.” He emphasized Indiana’s development through camp and the first three games before turning the focus directly to Northwestern.
“I’m not thinking about down the road.”

He later described Indiana as “process oriented” and said that approach gives the Hoosiers their best chance to become the team they want to be.
What Cignetti Sees in Northwestern
Cignetti called Northwestern a really good football team and praised head coach David Braun’s work. He pointed to an experienced Wildcats roster, their turnover margin, scoring production and red-zone defense.
- Aidan Chiles: Cignetti highlighted the quarterback’s development, mobility and ability to extend plays.
- Chip Kelly’s offense: Northwestern is leaning heavily on the run while using multiple formations, personnel groupings and Chiles’ dual-threat ability.
- Turnovers: Cignetti stressed the game-changing value of takeaways and the importance of Indiana protecting the football.
- Defensive priorities: Stop the run, contain Chiles, prevent explosive passes, tackle in space, swarm the football and control the line of scrimmage.
Cignetti Pushes Back on Josh Hoover Scrutiny
Cignetti also pushed back on what he considers excessive scrutiny of quarterback Josh Hoover. After reviewing the Western Kentucky film, the Indiana coach said Hoover’s performance contained fewer true misses than some of the postgame discussion suggested.
That is an important distinction as Indiana enters conference play. Hoover has been productive through the first three games, but Cignetti’s comments reinforce a larger point: evaluation inside the football building comes from the tape, assignments and circumstances of each play—not simply the result fans see in real time.
